By providing a space into which metal fines produced from sharpening can be cleared the dots keep the diamond surface clean for fast and efficient hone of all materials. Sharpening stone only. Amazon.com Review Diamond is the hardest material known, and as a result it can be used to sharpen everything from tungsten carbide and steel to ceramic, glass, and stone. This two-sided whetstone is coated with a perforated mesh of extremely durable monocrystalline diamond that sharpens much more quickly than a regular whetstone and won't form grooves or hollows over time. Because the DuoSharp lies flat and provides a wide surface, the whetstone works particularly well for wide-bladed knives. Light pressure strokes are all that are needed, and if lubricant is desired, use water not oil. Color-coded for quick reference, the blue-dotted side of the 8-by-3/8-by-2-5/8 stone features a coarse, 325-grit (45 micron) surface, while the red-dotted side features a finer 600 grit (25 micron). The coarse side restores dull or damaged edges, while the fine side, used regularly, keeps an edge razor-sharp. DMT makes a stand for the whetstone (sold separately) and will replace free of charge any product found to be defective. --Ann Bieri

Great to sharpen handplanes and chisels April 1, 2008 I've been using this stone as one of many to sharpen my chisels and handplanes. I've found that they remove material quickly and they take longe r to clog probably because of the small holes they have. I'm pretty happy with this stone and would definitely buy again.

This stone cuts quickly and is very handy, but I've found that the pattern leaves very visible score lines on the bevel. Maybe these affect sharpness, maybe they don't. It sure doesn't happen with any other stone I've used though and I don't like it. I've begun honing at an angle to the long axis and this solves the problem but effectively shortens the stone.
Great Product January 5, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've had a set of these stones for a couple months now. I've found them to be great for truing up hand planes and for sharpening chisels and plan blades.
