1 out of 5 stars Go with the Mag brand 3x the power   January 18, 2008
This is only 1 watt and not as bright as stock Mag bulbs. I have an Original Maglite LED upgrade and it is much better than the stock xenon/incadescent and 3x as bright as this off brand. Either stay with the regular or buy the Maglite brand LED upgrade that is 3 watt vs. this 1 watt. It costs twice as much to get the name brand but apparently you get what you pay for!

2 out of 5 stars Maybe more efficient, but smaller spectrum...   December 25, 2007
It makes sense that 'LED' lights are more efficient than standard incandescent and if that's the primary reason you want to switch to LEDs then this might make a lot of sense and be a great product for you.

Unabused, LEDs last forever and use about 1/10th the power. But, it comes at a cost and that (from my observations) is a narrower light spectrum. What I mean is that the light given off by an LED is a much flatter 'white' as opposed to the more warm/soft orange of a standard bulb. This makes it seem like it's not as powerful and since it's a narrower light spectrum, objects you look at not as easy to 'see' (details, color, etc.) Also, the cone of the light (effective area of illumination) is slightly smaller and the focusing is not as dynamic (I'm using a 2D Cell maglight).

I'm not a scientist or really anything more than just a consumer, so I may be wrong in my psuedo-scientific 'analysis'. But bottom line, the light given off from this product is not as good a standard bulb and since I've never really had a problem with battery life time or bulb performance, I won't be switching over to an LED any time soon (in fact, I've switched back to the regular bulb)....until or unless they produce a better version.

I bought this with the idea I could turn my Mag Lite into an LED Mag Lite. You are better off going to Home Depot and buying the Xenon replacement bulbs for your C/D cell Mag Lite. This LED bulb is very dim compared to the standard OEM bulb. It has a blue tint to it also. I tried the new LED when I bought it with new batteries also. The bulb does work and would be a good long lasting back up if you have already went through both bulbs that came with your C/D cell Mag Lite, but really, who has? Buy the Xenon replacement bulbs or if you really want a good LED flashlight get the Stanley tripod light.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed   June 24, 2007

I recently bought the Nite Ize 1 Watt LED upgrade kit with intelligent switch for a 2 AA Maglite. I was really impressed, worked amazingly well etc...

So I decided to try this LED ugrade kit for my 3D Maglite. I was surprised how bad the LED is. Like the other reviewer said, this LED upgrade is at least half as bright if not worse than the bulb it replaces. Nite Ize should be ashamed to even sell this upgrade. If you're looking for an upgrade, be sure that the LED states that it is at least 1 Watt or more, anything that doesn't state the brightness is obviously some old generation LED and not worth spending money on. I returned this item immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Important Safety Equipment Modification   March 21, 2007

This is one of the most peculiar LED flashlight thingies I have seen. The picture on the package not withstanding, this item will NOT make your flashlight brighter and stronger. Subjectively, it was slightly less bright than a 2D krypton flashlight, and much weaker than 3D-6D flashlights and lanterns.

You see, there are 2 types of LED flashlights: those that are super bright like incandescent, and suck out battery juice just as fast; then, there are the dimmer ones that give you fabulous battery life. This beauty is the latter, and quite unique. Most of the drop-in flashlight mods I know of are the former, and this Nite Ize is the only one of the latter I know of.

My main complaint: the light has a strong bluish tinge, strong even by LED standards (a cool-white fluorescent, only much worse). It sort of looks like those HID headlamps in import cars.

Now for the good part: the battery life with this thing can be measured in days rather than hours on ONE set of batteries: no spares needed or fear that the batteries will die at a critical moment. More batteries equals more days of light. Plus, this thing will not blow if you drop the flashlight onto the hard, hard ground. So, if you need reliable, long-term light from a hand held flashlight and intensity is not an issue, this is for you. For camping and emergency/survival/rescue applications, this is what you need.

Also, you are more or less required to use a Maglite. Since the light is pretty dim, I am assuming that heat build up at the heat sink is not an issue. However, the flashlight you use it in MUST have a focusing reflector, and Maglite is the only one I have seen in recent years; if you have a focusing flashlight that is a basic cheapie, this Nite Ize will be perfect. We tried to put it into a standard, non-focusing flashlight but the beam was so diffuse and spread out as to be pretty useless (sort of like "candle mode" in some brands of flashlights).

POSTSCRIPT
I finally got this thing into a proper 2D Maglite. Boy is the light weak and pathetic. I compared it to a Rayovac Industrial with a halogen bulb, and there was no contest: the LED lost hands down. In fact, it was so pathetic I considered discarding this LED conversion thingie; it was so amusing to see such a durable, strong (physically) flashlight put out such weak light that was much weaker than the stock krypton bulb. However, I resisted this impulse and placed it into my earthquake survival kit (I live in the SF bay area), for the day when the power grid will be offline not for hours but for weeks.

ANOTHER POSCRIPT
I found a couple of focusing flashlights that this Nite Ize should work in, but cost less than Maglite Roughneck Flashlights - ROUGH NECK FLASHLIGHT 2 Cell "D" Roughneck Flashlights - ROUGH NECK FLASHLIGHT 3 Cell "D". They are made of tough, durable plastic, and the 2AA version of these lights have survived inadvertently several years of use and abuse.

ANOTHER POSTSCRIPT
After living with it for a while, I have also discovered 2 much more important uses for this replacement bulb substitute. First, it is a good back up replacement to put into those flashlights or other battery operated appliance that blows a bulb, and you do not have the a replacment bulb of the correct voltage; this will do until you can get to the hardware store and get a proper bulb replacement. It also works in those power failure lights that use a cheapie incandescent flashlight bulb. The light of the one I have in the living room is so dim that it is a safety hazard all by itself and the power really goes out; this bulb makes the failure light nice and bright and good. So, I have actually purchased a few more and mainly keep them as spares in an emergency.
