4 out of 5 stars More of a Side-grade than Upgrade   October 7, 2008
The important thing to realize here is that this product changes your flashlight a lot -- in ways that some people will like, and other people obviously won't like. It no longer focuses to a bright spot, so you can't light up objects at much distance. It isn't nearly as bright either. On the good side, it's still bright enough to find your way around at night, and the quality of the light -- the whiteness and smoothness of the spot -- is much improved. A set of batteries will keep it running much longer, and the LEDs should never break or burn out. If those are the qualities you are looking for, then I say go for it!

On the other hand. . . If you want a small flashlight that's really bright, that focuses well and lights things up at at a distance (but with less battery life), then you might consider an actual Mini Maglite LED flashlight. It's a completely different beast, and I think they both have their uses.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing   September 16, 2008
Although it seems like a good idea, a relatively inexpensive upgrade to a battery saving LED, it's just not worth it. Beyond the inability to focus, you lose substantial illumination range, as with many basic LED's. This is something novices to LED illumination don't realize - unless you get a really good LED, the trade off for phenomenal "bulb" life, superior energy efficiency and potential output regulation (quality LED lights usually come with a regulating circuit that, after a typical early drop in light output will maintain steady output for a prolonged period before dropping off near battery end-of-life, unlike standard bulbs, which are brightest immediately upon putting in a new battery, then steadily drop in output until the battery's dead) is the fact that basic LED's are really just close in general illuminators. That's what this is. You lose the MagLite's reasonable "throw" and get a mediocre "near beam." If you're really looking for a super LED, look for lights with a "Cree" LED - as an example, see the Fenix L2D-CE (Cree Edition LED). This light also uses 2 AA batteries, just like the MagLite, but go check out the reviews. Yes, it costs more, but it's worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Bright battery saver   May 24, 2008
I found this upgrade very helpful. I like white as opposed to yellow light & it makes the battery last much longer. I feel it's also less fragile than the standard bulb.
I have two maglites & I have one on each one. It's a good investment.

1 out of 5 stars Exesively priced   February 24, 2008

this product is nice but exesively priced. Isn't better to buy a maglite with led for about $18 something with free shipping, that only this upgrade.
For almost the same price you can get the flashlight

5 out of 5 stars Nite-Ize Upgrade Kit for Mini Maglite   February 16, 2008
This product was exactly what I wanted (I bought 2) and the kits were easy to install. I now have 2 Mini Maglite flashlights which give a bright white light. I can see much more clearly at night than with the old bulbs which gave a yellowish light. [No more tripping over dog toys!] There has been no flickering or dimming of the light over time. I've noticed that the batteries are lasting longer. This product was not available in local stores, even our ACE Hardware. The Amazon price was reasonable, the kits were easy to order and they arrived VERY quickly. Overall, I'd rate this product as excellent.
