5 out of 5 stars Great Upgrade   October 17, 2007
I have purchased at least 6 of the previous model and this new "Elite" model is far superior.

5 out of 5 stars Handy-Dandy. Big Improvement on the Original Sapphire Light.   November 2, 2004

The Sapphire light that I've had for a few years is still going strong, but when I decided to purchase another one for my key chain, I chose the newer Elite model. It's the same size: 2 3/4 inches in the longest dimension, which is diagonal. And it comes in the usual rainbow of colors. But the Elite has three modes. The Constant-On mode is a tremendous improvement over earlier models and worth every penny of the Elite's slightly higher price. When you push the switch, the light turns on....and stays on until you push the switch again. No more aching index finger from holding the button in for several minutes. And I can set the Sapphire down, aim it where I want, and have both hands free. The light shuts off automatically after an hour. The second mode is an Alert mode, which the manufacturer (ASP) suggests you use to make your presence known in the dark. If you depress the switch for 5 seconds, the light flashes. You must also depress the switch for 5 seconds to turn it off. The third mode is SOS. Press the switch 3 times rapidly to make the Sapphire light pulse morse code for SOS. This is a little tricky; I have found that it takes 4 quick presses of the switch and a few attempts to activate the SOS mode. In any case, the Constant-On mode is a great convenience.

The Sapphire produces blue light, which is bright without being hard on the eyes. ASP claims it is visible for over a mile. The Sapphire is powered by a battery PowerPak containing a 6-volt lithium battery. It is replaceable. The battery I've had in my old unsophisticated Sapphire has yet to wear out, but I don't use it all that often. A paperclip works well in removing the battery pack. Insert the paperclip into the small hole on one side of the Sapphire, and the battery pack pops out the other side. The Sapphire's frame is black polycarbonate on all colors and models. The body of the light is encased in aluminum in the color of your choice. I like the black Elite Sapphire, because it is inconspicuous on my key chain. But if you'd rather it be conspicuous and easy to find, brighter choices are available. I think you'll prefer the Elite model to the standard Sapphire light, though. You won't be frustrated trying to keep the light turned on while fiddling with something.
