Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com Product Description
Bright lights, burly cases, fail-safe on/off switches, virtual indestructibility: there are good reasons to rave about Mag Instrument flashlights. Powered by 4 D-cell batteries, the bright, powerful light adjusts from spot to flood simply by rotating the head. The light is housed in a case made of high-strength aluminum alloy that has been anodized inside and out. This, along with high-quality O-rings at both openings, give you water- and shock-resistance in a lightweight package. Maglite's switches are rubber-coated, weather-protected, and self-cleaning-they're virtually indestructible. In short, this flashlight is almost indestructible-a good quality when it comes to the tools re rely on to help you find your way in the dark. Limited lifetime warranty. Requires 4 D-cell batteries (not included). Includes spare bulb (stored in the end-cap). If you don't think you'll need the extra run time the 4 D-cells give you, see Mag Instrument products #S2D016 and #S3D016.--Josh Dettweiler

Amazon.com Review
Bright lights, burly cases, fail-safe on/off switches, virtual indestructibility: there are very good reasons to rave about Mag Instrument flashlights. It goes without saying that a flashlight defeats its own purpose if it can't be trusted, which is why so many people spend a little extra for this four D-cell Mag-Lite. We've dropped ours off ladders, kicked it down stairs--just generally abused the thing--and it lights up now just as readily as it did when we first turned it on. Speaking of which, the on/off switch is one of the first things to fail on generic flashlights. Mag-Lite's switch is rubber coated and weather protected; frankly, it seems incapable of ever wearing out, even after thousands of clicks. Plus, twisting the flashlight's head gives you an option between a tight beam and a floodlight. More importantly, the combination of a supertough krypton gas lamp and high-quality reflectors provides unusually bright light. There's also an extra lamp in the tail cap so you've always got a backup--how many other flashlights deliver that?

But the Mag's indestructibility is its main selling point. Mag Instrument builds its flashlights with ultrastrong aluminum alloy cases that have been anodized both inside and out to resist rust. High-quality O-rings at both openings keep water away from the batteries. It's hard to imagine damaging one of these lights. Think of it this way: if, as one of our customers suggests, there were a kingdom of flashlights, Mag-Lite would be crowned king. --Jon Groebner

5 out of 5 stars A must item for any woman living on her own   September 7, 2008
My parents gave me one of these (stamped with the Boeing logo-must have been a freebie) when I moved out. Not so much for the giant amount of light it emits making it good for rolling black-outs. Rather, they gave me one so that I might be able to quickly subdue any intruder. Zombies, rapists, thugs, and thieves, BEWARE! The heavy over a foot long weapon would stop anything in it's tracks.

Thankfully I have not had to use it as a deadly weapon. It's served me well through many a blackout, and I imagine would make me a freeze-tag champion if my neighbors were more fun.

4 out of 5 stars Really Bright, But Too Big & Heavy   August 19, 2008
This is really a bright flashlight. A classic Maglite product. Made from aircraft aluminum. It is really rugged that it became an issue with the LAPD for using them as a melee weapon. Wife does not want to touch it, it is heavy like a sledgehammer.

Pros:
-It is blinding bright.
-Adjustable beam spread by twisting the head, which is also serves as the on and off switch.
-Well constructed in every detail.
-Water resistant
-It even includes a spare lamp inside the tail cap (under the spring).
-Reasonable price

Cons:
-Uses 4 "D" batteries that makes it so heavy and big. It is a struggle to carry it unless you need it also as a weapon.
-Maglites are somewhat overrated in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Well...what can I say...   May 22, 2008
...it's big, it's a Mag Light and it REALLY works when you need it. I purchased the sturdy clips and installed it inside our key cabinet, so when we need it we just grab it, the keys and go

3 out of 5 stars my experience   May 1, 2008
its a graat torch very powerful bulb good focus but the only issue s that due to 4 batteries of A makes it very difficult to carry due to the weigt of 4 cells for residence purpose the 2 cell would be more confortable reg yusuf

3 out of 5 stars Outdated but still worth owning   April 21, 2008
Yes, you can buy smaller and lighter flashlighs that put out more light and have longer battery life. But...if you are looking for something that is built like a tank AND produces a decent amount of light, then I recommend getting one.

I keep one in my car and one around the house. It is what I carry when taking a walk at night. The Surefire on my belt puts out a lot of light, but you would be hard pressed to fend off a dog attack with one.
