5 out of 5 stars Excellent Hiking/Camping/Survival Guide!   October 5, 2008
I fully agree with the reviews of Billy and A.P.Whitehall. When I first saw this book I wasn't impressed. Maybe the "Boy Scouts of America Label" made me think "general" for some reason or the cartoonish illustrations but BOY WAS I WRONG! After I really started looking through it carefully and reading all of the little blurbs I realized I had found a well prepared and well rounded "wilderness training manual". I really like the in depth coverage of food for travel. CAUTION on pg. 86: Do not eat water lily roots!!! According to Samuel Thayer's "The Forager's Harvest" (pg. 8) "...the rootstocks and tubers of most, if not all, species of Nuphar and Nymphaea are poisonous." This is a common case of one author copying someone elses mistake among edible plant books...BE CAREFUL! Don't believe everything you read!!! A lot of excellent real life sequential pictures for great visuals of what is in the text that accompanies the pics. I could go on and on about how good this or that is but there is no reason to. Covers A to Z, overflowing with great tips and very visual. Will compliment even an experienced outdoorsman's library.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly crafted training manual: A valued addition to your outdoor library   July 8, 2008
This book was extremely well done. The balance between visuals and text is superb. The information is good and easily comprehended from page to page. Many survival guides rely on hand drawn diagrams that can sometimes be difficult to interpret. I love that this guide frequently uses top notch photography for its illustrations. As such, it makes for an enjoyable read. This manual is perfect for the amateur hiker/camper as well as the seasoned survivalist. Five stars, A+, Well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Must have for scouters and outdoors enthusiats   January 7, 2008

This is an excellent book that has information ranging from how to survive in various situations, including how to make a fishing hook out of a rose thorn to what you should pack for an overnighter. It includes how to build a variety of shelters and how to make a backpack out of a poncho. It explains how to find and purify water and find safe food. It even explains different ways to cook food including talking about different camp stoves and even how to build a mud oven. It even includes how to survive at sea and semifore signals. This review would be 10 pages long if I tried to explain everything that was in it. This book was definitely worth the money we paid for it and was cheaper at Amazon that at the BSA store.
