1 out of 5 stars What was shipped is not what was ordered   September 25, 2008

The rating is for what was shipped.

The lock itself gets 5 stars from me. I have had a STL Snug-Tite lock for several years and like it very much. Unfortunately, the lock came off (my fault) though the bolt portion is still very securely attached (even after taking it on some rough 4wd roads in Colorado). So I ordered a new one for the locking mechanism.

However, what Amazon shipped is the STL2 Snug-Tite (which I can get locally). If you want the STL, don't order this one as you may not get what you ordered. I requested a replacement with the correct one and asked that they confirm it was the correct one. Unfortunately, they shipped the wrong one again.

4 out of 5 stars Effective Security for Thule Terrapin   September 8, 2008
The Terrapin comes with a nut welded on the interior of the hitch receiver so a conventional pin lock will not work in securing the carrier to the hitch. This item makes use of the nut by threading on to it. There is an extension to the bolt which extends outside the hitch receiver, allowing attachment of the lock.

This arrangement is effective, but requires use of the Thule lock assembly instead of a large number of generic locks for securing an accessory to a trailer hitch.

3 out of 5 stars Thule STL Snug-Tite Lock   June 9, 2008

I ordered this lock but received the other version; the one that goes through and locks on the other side. The one I received works, but is not as secure as this version. I was very disappointed, because I could have purchased the version that was sent to me locally, but ordered this one because I believe it is more secure. On the version I was sent, the lock fastens on the end of the bolt on the other side of the receiver. Problem is there is a small portion of the bolt exposed, and a thief could gain access with a cutting tool. This one (which I did not receive) is much more secure, in that no part of the bolt is exposed. I had to use the version I was sent anyway, because I was going on a trip and couldn't wait for an exchange. Amazon did not even acknowledge that they made the substitution, so it makes me leery of ordering anything else from them if I'm in a time crunch.

5 out of 5 stars Snug-Tite Log   June 11, 2007

The Snug-Tite Lock is exactly as described. Easy to install and gives me peace of mind that my carrier will still be there after a ride.

4 out of 5 stars Expensive, but seems effective.   March 15, 2007

Thule bicycle carriers have a threaded hole that can use either a hex-head bolt (provided with the rack) or one of these secure bolts to attach the bike rack to the hitch receiver.

The Snug-Tite Lock has a cover that locks over the head of a stainless steel bolt to keep a thief from using a wrench to steal the carrier. It looks like it will stop casual theft by requiring a thief to cut off the cover before unscrewing the bolt.

It seems a bit pricy for a lock, but the bike carrier is an expensive enough item to make some precautions worthwhile. I was able to save a few dollars on both the rack and the Snug-Tite lock by shopping around.

After a few weeks of use, I found that the Snug-Tite Lock's bolt had backed out slightly from vibration, letting the rack become slightly loose in the hitch receiver. Application of a mild thread locking compound (Blue Loc-Tight or similar) solved the problem.
