Surf's Up is a computer-animated sports mockumentary about penguin surfing contests, which makes it stand out from the crowd of penguin movies. The story unfolds as it would on ESPN, with interviews (with penguins) overlapping footage of (penguin) surfing action, gradually unveiling the tale of Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia LaBeouf, Holes), a young penguin from Antarctica with dreams of winning a surfing competition--a competition named after his idol, the missing Big Z (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski). But when he joins the competition, Cody finds his zeal for winning may not be enough to defeat the cruel reigning champ, Tank Evans (Diedrich Bader, Grim & Evil). The story of Surf's Up is typical stuff: Youngster learns to value friendship over material success. But the documentary style gives the movie a different rhythm from the usual feature-length cartoon; it stutters and skips around, dithers on side topics, and backtracks to catch up with supporting characters. Some viewers may be annoyed, but others--perhaps the more media-savvy--will find it a refreshing change of pace. (Kids who don't watch much sports, however, may just find it confusing.) Surf's Up also features the voices of James Woods (Hercules), Zooey Deschanel (Elf), and Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite). --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best animated film I've ever seen   January 6, 2009
For the life of me, I cannot understand the negative reviews given to this movie. The animation was just beautiful. Seeing what they were able to do with the ocean alone is incredible. It leaves me happy at the end every time I watch it. The music picked to go with the scenes fits perfectly. I DO NOT like most cartoons or animated anything, so this movie is a rarity for me. I'm twenty-eight, with no kids, and expected to find this movie boring and childish. Instead, it has wonderful dialogue, a great storyline, and fully-developed characters. Chicken Joe, voiced by Jon Heder, is adorable. Shia is wonderful as Cody- somehow, they manage to capture a little bit of his spirit in the penguin he "plays". I have watched this movie numerous times, simply because it always makes me laugh and leaves me feeling like the world is not such a bad place.

If I had kids, I would have no qualms letting them see it- there was no foul language in at all, contrary to some reviewers' comments. Yes, death is brought up a couple of times in the movie. To all the people wearing rose-colored glasses out there, death is a normal part of life, and children don't need the experience sugar-coated. They are not stupid, don't need to be talked down to, and can handle the truth that life is impermanent. If you wanted to shield your children from reality, you shouldn't have brought them into the world to begin with.

5 out of 5 stars I love it!   December 16, 2008
WHen I first saw this movie on dvd, I knew I had to have it...although it is a cartoon, it still had enough humor that was still mature enough so I wasn't bored..chicken Joe is AWESOME! The graphics are nice, and it has a nice story line, I knew I would add it to my collection of UMD's!

5 out of 5 stars Wow With Water   December 6, 2008

Wow. This is just too much fun. When you've watched it, head over to the "How They Made It" special feature and check out how they managed to use a steady-cam on animation! Definitely want this one for Christmas. Jeff Bridges is hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Determination!   October 30, 2008
Approximately 1 hr 20 minutes, this DVD is a nice story, has great color, super clear pix, great animation, and nice music. This is a story about determination, motivation, the importance of friendship, standing up against the odds and going all-out after your dream. It's a great story for kids. I occasionally like to nourish my own inner child and also to see what movies are teaching our children (even though my child is 35.) This is a penguin story and is a take-off of the "Happy Feet" character types.

When Cody Maverick was just a little pengie, he met "Big Z," the all-time best of the penguin surfers, the really big Kahouna. Big Z took the time to speak to little Cody and to give him a Big Z surfer pendant and told Cody about the importance of not giving up and going after your dreams. Little Cody was very impressionable and Big Z's words and gesture so motivated Cody that they stuck with him all his life. Cody grows up determined to be just like Big Z, even after Big Z disappears in a big wave.

Now, Cody is a 17-year old teenage penguin super-surfer dude. He lives with mom and older brother. Dad was eaten by a whale some years ago, as is fairly common with penguin dads. The older brother is very negative but Cody does not let the sarcasm deter him. Through sheer determination, Cody sets out to win the big surfer contest at the Big Z Memorial Surfing Event.

This story also helps illustrate how important a gesture it is when a celebrity does something positive for someone. Because a celeb is already so much in the public's eye, a kind act can go very far in encouraging others. Celebs are role models for many kids. I'm glad to see it when they are positive role models. And by the way, it's really cool how they make these animated pengies appear so "human".

Nice movie and suitable for all ages.
